Data on deaths from any cause were obtained from the electronic medical record and death records from the Jefferson County Coroner Medical Examiner’s Office, the county in which most of the Birmingham metro area resides, from October 2016 to December 2019. This includes inpatient deaths captured in the electronic medical record and deaths in the community evaluated by the Medical Examiner’s office. This date was selected to include any deaths that occurred from the study start until December 2019.
